Liverpool’s Fernando Torres has picked out team-mate Steven Gerrard as the player to shine the brightest at the World Cup. The newly appointed England captain is seen by the striker as “the most complete central midfielder in the world”, and is being tipped to feed off the disappointment of the Reds’ recent season.

"I can see Stevie being the player of the World Cup, not just for England but at the tournament," said the Spaniard on the club’s official website. "He will be more disappointed than anyone at Liverpool’s season and he will want to end the campaign on a high.”

Torres also has his sights set on a possible “perfect final” between England and Spain, claiming it would be the battle between the world’s strongest first XIs.
