With Ledley King likely to be out for around three weeks following his groin injury sustained against the United States, England will have to put their faith in Liverpool veteran Jamie Carragher to partner John Terry in the heart of defense when the Three Lions face Algeria in their next match.

Despite being a late call up to the squad, and being thrust in the starting XI following injuries to skipper Rio Ferdinand and defender King, Carragher is unfazed by his sudden increase in responsibility. “Yes, if I’m given the opportunity. Time will tell, we’ll be able to assess after the performances," he said to the league’s official website when asked about the prospect of partnering Terry. "You have got to be confident with the ability both players have got."

Carragher replaced King at half time in England’s match against the USA, getting booked early on, but showed he was able to cope as the game went on.
