Germany have suffered a blow ahead of their last 16 World Cup meeting with England on Sunday with the news that striker Cacau has been ruled out of the match. Cacau apparently suffered a pulled stomach muscle during training and will not recover in time to face the English.

Coach Joachim Low has expressed disappointment at the prospect of losing Cacau, but the German camp are confident enough cover is available. The 29-year-old striker has made a good impression so far in South Africa, confirming his place as amongst the best goalscorers in the Bundesliga.

Cacau was born in Brazil and only headed to Germany in 1999. This has seen plenty of criticism head the way of the German FA, with many claiming Cacau should not be representing the national side. In this respect his absence from the England game could have averted any uproar that a winning goal from the Brazil-born striker could cause.
