Germany star Michael Ballack has rejoined former club Bayer Leverkusen, signing a two-year contract with the Bundesliga side. Ballack had recently been released from Chelsea following the expiry of his deal with the Premier League champions and also suffered the heartbreak of missing the World Cup through injury.

Despite stating a desire to remain in English football, the German international was most courted by clubs from his homeland and it is Leverkusen who have won the race for his signature, taking the midfielder back to the club he played for between 1999 and 2002, before moving to Bayern Munich first and then Chelsea.

"With my transfer a circle is complete"
, Ballack told Leverkusen’s official website. "I had a beautiful and successful time here, which I like to look back on a lot."
