Liverpool midfielder Steven Gerrard has given his backing to England coach Fabio Capello, labelling the Italian boss a "fantastic manager". Ironically, Gerrard’s comments may be taken as a sign not just that he would like Capello to remain in charge of the national team, but also that the Italian would be welcome at Anfield if he parts company with the FA and Liverpool’s deal with Roy Hodgson breaks down.

"I’m sure Fabio will stay [with the England team] and he’ll address his own situation very soon.

"I don’t know when. Personally, I’d like him to stay as I think he’s a fantastic manager, but that’s my opinion."

The comments leave little doubt that the Liverpool star is firmly behind Capello, perhaps more so than many of his national team colleagues. They also quite clearly show that were the Italian to be appointed the manager at Anfield then it is a choice Gerrard would be firmly behind.
