New Real Madrid coach Jose Mourinho has moved swiftly to defend Cristiano Ronaldo from criticism as the fallout from Portugal’s World Cup exit to Spain gathers pace. Portuguese fans expected Ronaldo to be more involved in the game and to lead them to a latter stage than the last 16, yet at times the Real Madrid star looked out of ideas.

Asked why Spain had defeated Portugal Mourinho blasted: "because they were better", pressed on the reasons for that the Real Madrid boss said: "It is not for me to address this issue."

The former Inter coach then went on to defend Cristiano Ronaldo to his interviewers AS, assuring them that under his leadership fingers will not be pointed at individual players at the Bernabeu.

"In my team, when we win, we win together. It’s the same thing when you lose. Cristiano can relax and enjoy his holiday. Next season I will not let anyone place the entire responsibility for the team on his shoulders."
