Diego Forlan has been crowned Sportsman of the Year in his home country of Uruguay following his exploits in the World Cup. The striker was in sensational form in South Africa, following on from a season where he helped Atletico Madrid to a domestic and European cup double.

"I’m honoured to receive this award", said Forlan. "I have already had the chance to win other prizes abroad, but having it here, in Uruguay, where I was born and where I grew up, is a privilege."

Forlan is hot property this summer, as his displays for Uruguay have made him coveted by a number of European clubs. Juventus and Manchester City are the two believed to be most interested in the forward, although Forlan has declared he is happy to remain at the Vicente Calderon.
