As expected New York Red Bulls have completed the signing of Mexico defender Rafael Marquez. Marquez had been released by La Liga giants Barcelona on a free transfer, but only on the understanding he headed across the pond to MLS.

The Mexico star has been welcomed at New York, with Dietmar Beiersdorfer, head of Red Bull global soccer, explaining just why the MLS side were so keen to get their man.

"Rafael has shown on the club and international level that he is one of the world’s top players", said Beiersdorfer. "He has been a winner at all levels and illustrated that he is a leader both on and off the field."

Marquez himself, who follows former Barcelona team-mate Thierry Henry to the club, said he was thrilled with the challenge, adding that he will "do my very best to help the Red Bulls in their playoff push this year and compete for championships for years to come."
