The Argentine Football Association have confirmed that it is unlikely they will have appointed a successor to Diego Maradona by the time they face the Republic of Ireland on 11th August. Indeed, it could be as late as October before Argentina decide on their next coach.

The AFA are keen to make the right appointment and not rush the process. They also want to dovetail the appointment with a comprehensive plan to take the team right up to the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. A World Cup on the territory of such a fierce rival is one the Argentines want to ensure they are competitive in.

One of the first duties of the new coach will be to ready the side for the 2011 Copa America, a tournament Argentina hope to win.
