Blackburn Rovers goalkeeper Paul Robinson has retired from international football just hours after being named in Fabio Capello’s England squad to face Hungary on Wednesday.

Robinson, who had been England’s number 1 before and took part in the 2006 World Cup in Germany, was not prepared to make up the numbers as a third choice keeper.

"Only now have I been able to make this decision", explained Robinson, "as previously I haven’t been in contention for selection."

The former Tottenham Hotspur keeper explained that he did not see himself as merely a backup and did not want such a role.

"I don’t see myself as a number three or four goalkeeper and find that role very frustrating."

In an attempt to make a break with the disastrous World Cup in South Africa, Fabio Capello has called up three previously uncapped players to his squad. These are: Bobby Zamora, Kieran Gibbs and Jack Wilshere.

However, many of the old guard who flopped so badly, including John Terry, Steven Gerrard and Gareth Barry retain their places.
