Liverpool are expected to complete the signing of Danish midfielder Christian Poulsen imminently, adding further fuel to the fire of Javier Mascherano’s exit. Roy Hodgson, who worked with Poulsen at FC Copenhagen, believes the enforcer will add some steel to Liverpool’s midfield.

It is understood Poulsen will cost Liverpool £6M and has been offered a three-year contract at Anfield. There are not expected to be any late complications regarding the deal.

Strangely, the move marks the end of a midfield merry-go-round which began when Juventus tried and failed to sign Xabi Alonso from Liverpool. Poulsen, then at Sevilla, was identified as the next best option by the Old Lady. Now Liverpool, many would argue still missing Alonso, have turned to the Dane.
