Hatem Ben Arfa’s proposed loan move to Newcastle United appears to have hit a last minute hitch. As the French side prepare an assault for Sevilla striker Luis Fabiano, which would be in part financed by the sale of Mamadou Niang, they seem reluctant to allow both Niang and Ben Arfa to depart.

The speedy winger had assumed a move to Newcastle on a season-long loan deal was done and dusted, but the final okay has not yet been forthcoming from the Stade Velodrome.

Marseille’s president Jean-Claude Dassier appeared to rule out the departure of both Ben Arfa and Niang yesterday when he told the club’s TV channel that it was not "realistic to sell Ben Arfa and Niang."

From his part Ben Arfa is keen to head to England with Newcastle and his side are working hard to push the deal forward. Also keeping an eye on developments are Werder Bremen who may, if the winger is still available, move for him if the sale of Mesut Ozil to Barcelona takes place.
