Steaua Bucharest have another new coach following the resignation of Victor Piturca. The choice of president Gigi Becali is none other than former Romanian international Ilie Dumitrescu.

41-year-old Dumitrescu has been well travelled as a coach, most notably managing several sides in Greek football, the largest being AEK Athens and PAOK Salonika. As a player Dumitrescu had the pleasure of playing with Gheorghe Hagi and was part of the Romania side which made the quarter-finals at the 1994 World Cup.

President Becali was apparently impressed by Dumitrescu’s desire to coach Steaua as the former forward offered to take the position for free.

"He will not be my employee", said Becali. "He does not want money from the club."

Nevertheless, Dumitrescu will sign a symbolic contract with the 1986 European Cup winners.
