Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson is backing his youngsters to come good this season and prove his decision not to splash out big money in the summer the correct one.

United have been criticised in some quarters for not flashing the cash and bringing in any big-name players, but Ferguson is trusting in youth.

"We could have bought players in the summer for a lot of money", Ferguson told United’s official site, "but I didn’t think they would have really made the difference. They wouldn’t have done what Cantona, Rooney or Ronaldo did for us. They wouldn’t have given us that quantum leap."

Ferguson is backing new arrivals Javier Hernandez, Chris Smalling and Bebe to prove his policy to be the right one.

"I feel it is the right policy for Manchester United. We’re good at producing our own young players and we’re also good at developing young players."
