One of the transfer sagas of the summer, that of Marseille winger Hatem Ben Arfa, looks to be coming to a close. Reports from France confirm that yesterday Marseille and Newcastle United officials, together with representatives of Ben Arfa, were locked in negotiations and finalised a deal.

Ben Arfa must now pass a medical at Newcastle which he is expected to do shortly according to RMC. Newcastle have scheduled a press conference for Monday where they are expected to present the 23-year-old as their newest signing.

The English club have beaten off competition from Werder Bremen who appeared in pole position to sign Ben Arfa last week. Indeed, Marseille would have rather the winger signed for the Bundesliga club, who offered the highest fee. However, the former Lyon youngster has snubbed their interest and participation in the Champions League for a possible relegation battle with Newcastle United.
