After losing Javier Mascherano to Spanish champions Barcelona, Liverpool appear to have landed a major scoop in signing Portuguese international Raul Meireles who has – until now – been plying his trade at Porto.

The 27-year-old who exhibited his impressive skills during the World Cup is considered to be the ideal candidate to fill the gap Mascherano has left behind as a defensive midfielder.

According to Portuguese newspaper A Bola and the English media, the negotiations which only started early on Friday are likely to come to a close this weekend, with personal terms between the player and Liverpool already agreed.

With a transfer fee of an estimated €11M (£10.7M) in total, Roy Hodgson seems to have found a considerably cheaper midfield alternative and will still have money in his pocket as Mascherano is said to leave Anfield for £17M.
