Liverpool boss Roy Hodgson is hoping to complete a deal for PSV Eindhoven striker Ola Toivonen before the transfer window closes. The former Fulham manager believes that he needs more backup for Fernando Torres, despite having David Ngog and knowing Ryan Babel can slot in up front.

PSV would like to keep hold of Swedish forward Toivonen, having only signed him from Malmo in 2009 for €4.5M, however a substantial bid from Liverpool would force their hand. The Dutch side would be looking for upwards of €11M and it remains to be seen whether Hodgson has that much money left to spend.

Toivonen has made the breakthrough to the Swedish national team of late, scoring most recently against Scotland in a friendly on 11th August. With a Finnish father Toivonen could have chosen to play for Finland, but opted for Sweden instead.
