Liverpool have announced they have completed the signing of Raul Meireles from FC Porto for a fee of €14M. The Reds moved swiftly to replace Javier Mascherano who has headed to Barcelona, and Meireles has signed a four-year deal at Anfield.

The Portuguese international has been with Porto since the summer of 2004 and established himself as an essential cog in the machine which won four successive Liga Sagres titles between 2005 and 2009.

Meireles is a box-to-box midfielder with greater drive than Mascherano, but does not screen the defence with the same efficiency as the Argentine. Indeed, it appears Mascherano’s true replacement is already at Anfield in the form of Danish midfielder Christian Poulsen.

Reds boss Roy Hodgson will be delighted to sign such an experienced European performer and will hope Meireles can quickly adapt to life in the Premier League.
