Birmingham City have snapped up Barcelona outcast Alexander Hleb on a season-long loan deal, ending the former Arsenal star’s limbo at the Camp Nou.

Hleb spent last season on loan at Stuttgart, where he had a limited impact, and was told upon arrival back in Barcelona that he was free to find a new team. The winger was linked as a makeweight in Barcelona’s Javier Mascherano raid on Liverpool, but Roy Hodgson chose to pass on Hleb.

"Hleb is a top quality player – one who at one stage we’d only actually dreamed about really", said Birmingham boss Alex McLeish to the club’s website, delighted about the capture.

"Over the past year or so we have talked about him but with no real belief we could get him. We decided to give it a try and towards the end of the window we found out it might be possible.

"This is a major signing for us and we are very happy to have him here. He is an extremely creative type who is skillful, a great dribbler and has an excellent touch and quick feet."
