Sunderland have smashed their transfer record to sign Ghana World Cup star Asamoah Gyan. The striker has arrived at the Stadium of Light from French side Rennes for fee believed to be €16M.

Gyan was the subject of serious interest and a bid from Turkish giants Fenerbahce earlier in the summer, but Rennes had suggested they were only prepared to sell the striker if they were able to bring Loic Remy in from Nice. Remy subsequently headed to Marseille, but Sunderland’s big money has been too much for the Ligue 1 side to resist.

The Ghana star has signed a four-year deal with Sunderland and had always been clear that a move to the Premier League was his first choice.
