Liverpool are believed to have failed with bids for Carlton Cole and Bobby Zamora yesterday as they searched frantically for another striker to sign before the transfer window slammed shut.
The Reds were reported to have offered £9M for Carlton Cole and there was a suggestion that either Ryan Babel or Lucas could be included as part of any deal, yet both players are thought to have ruled out swapping Anfield for Upton Park. It was even reported at one point that Babel was on a helicopter heading south.
At Craven Cottage, Fulham rejected three substantial offers for Zamora and at least one of these is thought to have come from Roy Hodgson at Liverpool.
By late afternoon it became clear that Hodgson was not going to land any of his attacking targets and much of the burden this season will once again fall on Fernando Torres.
