Portugal boss Carlos Queiroz has told Liverpool fans they can expect to see a fantastic player in Raul Meireles. The Portuguese international was signed from FC Porto as Javier Mascherano’s replacement for a fee of £11.5M and hopes are high on Anfield that he can match the Argentine.

"He’s a box-to-box midfielder, he’s hard working, creative, is a good finisher, he’s consistent, very solid, a great team player", beamed Queiroz. "He’s a great person who is serious, he’s a player who has a lot of capacity to communicate. He’ll be a great reinforcement for the Liverpool team."

The Portugal coach knows what it takes to succeed in England’s top flight having spent time as Sir Alex Ferguson’s assistant manager at Manchester United. Roy Hodgson will be hoping that Queiroz’s verdict rings true.
