Fabio Capello has praised the standard of his two forwards Wayne Rooney and Jermain Defoe as England ran out 4-0 winners over Bulgaria at Wembley. The performance got England off to the perfect start in their Euro 2012 qualifying group and sent a message to Switzerland ahead of their meeting next week.

Capello was particularly impressed with Defoe – who bagged an impressive hat-trick – and Rooney who operated in something of a new role.

"Defoe is always very important to us", said Capello. "He can shoot with the left foot, with the right foot and his performance was really really good and his movement without the ball was fantastic."

The Italian also went on to praise Rooney for playing "in a position different to usual" as Capello deployed the Manchester United striker just in front of his two central midfielders, telling him to push on from there. Such a fine victory will no doubt ensure England head to Switzerland full of confidence.
