Sources in France believe that Gerard Houllier is drawing closer to a return to English football. The French tactician, who enjoyed a long spell at Liverpool, leading the club to a cup treble in 2001, before going on to help Lyon pick up successive Ligue 1 titles, appears to be in pole position.

Houllier however, would be unlikely to return as a pure manager at Villa Park, with the club hierarchy thinking of keeping current caretaker Kevin MacDonald and adding Houllier above him in a new management structure. There has even been talk that former Liverpool and Aston Villa star Steve Staunton could join as MacDonald’s assistant coach.

Should Houllier choose to take the job though there would be little doubt that the Frenchman was pulling the strings. Often coming under fire for dull counter attacking football during his spell at Anfield, Houllier nevertheless managed success in Europe and a second place Premier League finish.
