As a sign of their determination to sign Cesc Fabregas in the near future, Barcelona have decided to leave the number 4 shirt vacant for the Arsenal skipper.

Barcelona tried and failed to sign Fabregas in the summer, with Arsenal unwilling to listen to offers for their Spanish playmaker. Fabregas has recently gone on record as saying that when Arsenal told him he would not be sold, he decided to concentrate just on this season, but it appears Barcelona have not.

At the Camp Nou, the feeling is that Fabregas can be the true midfield successor to club legend and current coach Pep Guardiola. Guardiola himself wore the number 4 for Barcelona between 1990 and 2001, making nearly 300 appearances for the club. Since that time, for all their talent, Barcelona still believe they have yet to find his true heir – but Fabregas could be it.

Thus the Camp Nou side have decided not to issue the number 4 jersey. Hoping that next summer they will be able to bring it out of the cupboard and print Fabregas on it.
