Gerard Houllier is believed to have agreed a three-year contract with Aston Villa and the move will become official once he has met his bosses at the French Football Federation to secure his release.

The exact make-up of Houllier’s backroom staff at Villa has yet to be finalised however, with the Frenchman wanting to bring in Phil Thompson, who was his number two at Liverpool, as assistant manager. Aston Villa though are keen for caretaker boss Kevin MacDonald to retain some sort of senior position and are loath to lose such a talented coach.

Houllier is believed to see great potential at Villa Park and still sees unfinished business in English football after his spell with Liverpool came to an end in 2004.
