Gerard Houllier has been appointed as Aston Villa’s new manager. The Frenchman’s arrival was confirmed by the Premier League club late last night in a statement which concluded Houllier ticked all the boxes they were looking for in Martin O’Neill’s successor.

Houllier has left his job as technical director of the French Football Federation, explaining that he found it impossible to turn down Aston Villa’s approach.

"I am very happy and proud to join this great and historic club", said the former Liverpool boss. "It was a very difficult decision for me to leave the FFF, but I could not turn down the opportunity to join a club whose approach on and off the pitch I have long admired.

"Aston Villa are one of England’s biggest clubs and have an amazing set of fans. This is a tremendous challenge and one I am very much looking forward to taking on."
