Portugal have sacked coach Carlos Queiroz with immediate effect. Although the reasons for the decision were not at first disclosed by the country’s FA, Queiroz was suspended for six months after the former Manchester United assistant was judged to have disrupted a drugs test, just a week ago.

Debate had raged in Portugal over Queiroz’s future as the national side faces a crucial period as they attempt to qualify for Euro 2012 in Poland and the Ukraine.

"Carlos Queiroz’s contract is settled with immediate effect", read a statement from the Portuguese Football Federation. "The decision has been communicated to Carlos Queiroz who will receive the reason for the decision first hand."

Early talk in Portugal makes ex-Sporting Lisbon coach Paulo Bento as the early frontrunner to become the country’s new boss.
