On the lookout for an assistant manager he can trust, new Aston Villa boss Gerard Houllier is expected to move for Gary McAllister. Houllier had at first offered the job to Phil Thompson, who acted as his trusty lieutenant at Liverpool until the duo departed in 2004; however Thompson has declined the role, citing family reasons.

McAllister was signed by Houllier for Liverpool in 2000 in a masterstroke which saw the popular Scottish midfielder pick up five trophies in 2001. The former Leeds United player was hugely respected by Houllier who has kept a close eye on his progress in the world of management.

Now currently first team coach at Middlesbrough, it would be hard for McAllister to refuse a return to the top flight alongside the French tactician. The 45-year-old is believed to be ready to say ‘yes’ to Houllier’s approaches.
