With Jose Mourinho looking unlikely to be able to help out the Portuguese national team, the country’s FA (FPF) are expected to move swiftly to fill the post. And former Sporting Lisbon boss Paulo Bento is the heavy favourite to take over.

Following Carlos Queiroz’s departure, Bento’s name was immediately put forward, and though Mourinho and even Diego Maradona were subsequently suggested and tipped for the job, the ex-Sporting man never went away and was always in the FPF’s thoughts.

Reports from Portugal suggest that Bento will be offered a deal running until 2012 and the 41-year-old is likely to accept it. Bento won 35 caps for his country in a ten-year spell.
