According to Catalan daily Sport, Barcelona had all but tied up a deal for Mesut Ozil, before deciding to pull out and switch their attention entirely to Cesc Fabregas.
The Spanish paper reports that the Camp Nou hierarchy had agreed a fee of just €7.5M for Ozil, and may have then instantly loaned him back to Werder Bremen for this season. However, Ozil was not on coach Pep Guardiola’s wanted list, although the Catalan rates the German midfielder, and Fabregas was Barcelona’s primary target.
Sources close to the Camp Nou club have expressed surprise that Real Madrid paid €15M to sign Ozil when they themselves could have bagged the player for half that price.
