Manchester United centre back Rio Ferdinand has laughed off suggestions that the club’s previously tight defence is now conceding far too many goals. Ferdinand missed the World Cup through injury this summer, but is now back and ready to ensure he bolsters United’s rearguard.

"A lot has been made about us not keeping clean sheets", said Ferdinand to the club’s website, "but I’ve been at all the games. I haven’t seen us get opened up to make it a real crisis. We have been a little unfortunate and unlucky in certain circumstances, maybe even naive at points, but we haven’t been opened up in a manner that would make it a massive problem."

Ferdinand also pointed to the clean sheet United scored in midweek at Valencia as a good result and further evidence the defence is much better than it has recently been given credit for.
