Liverpool legend Steve Nicol has backed the club’s prospective new owners New England Sports Ventures. The Scot, who clocked up over 300 appearances for the Reds between 1981 and 1995, thinks that the group which already owns the Boston Red Sox could bring the glory days back to Anfield.

"My understanding of this group is that they have protected and nurtured the history and tradition of one of America’s beloved teams, while bringing success to the franchise", Nicol told Liverpool’s website.

"As a former player for, and now supporter of, Liverpool Football Club, this is the type of ownership group Liverpool should be looking to, to take the club back to where it rightfully belongs."

Nicol has been head coach at MLS side New England Revolution for eight years and has enjoyed great success in the United States. His words, and knowledge of the performance of New England Sports Ventures, will no doubt put at ease many concerns still held by Liverpool supporters over the club’s prospective owners.
