Former Arsenal forward Paul Merson believes that Wayne Rooney must have an exit lined up for him to have told Sir Alex Ferguson that he wants to leave Old Trafford. Merson, who now works as a pundit for Sky Sports, told Sky Sports Soccer Special that he cannot conceive of a situation where Rooney would declare he wanted to leave but didn’t have a destination in mind.

"You’re at the biggest club in the world", said Merson, "so you’re not telling me that he doesn’t have somewhere to go. You don’t do that and say you want to leave if you don’t have somewhere to go. Why would you do that?"

Rooney has already been linked with a number of clubs both in England and abroad, but it is believed that he wishes to remain in the north west. This would appear to put Manchester City at the head of the queue, while a dramatic return to Everton, the striker’s boyhood club, cannot be entirely ruled out.
