Liverpool manager Roy Hodgson has praised his side for securing a 0-0 draw away at Napoli last night. The Reds went into the game low on confidence, sat second from bottom in the Premier League table, but despite Hodgson having left a number of first team stars at home, including Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres, produced a highly competent display.

The result leaves Liverpool on top of Group K, with five points, two clear of Utrecht and Napoli and three clear of Steaua Bucharest.

"It was a very positive performance and in many respects, a good point – a point maybe people didn’t think we would be capable of getting here with the team selected", Hodgson told the club’s official site. "But the team proved people wrong in that respect and their efforts on the field were very commendable. I don’t think we should be anything other than delighted with the fact we played well, got the point, and are still top of the table."

Hodgson’s key test however, lies ahead. With the former Fulham boss under huge pressure it is essential that Liverpool beat Blackburn in the Premier League on Sunday. A fact Hodgson acknowledged with his decision to leave key players at home.
