Wayne Rooney has performed a dramatic U-turn and agreed to stay at Manchester United and sign a new five-year deal. The England star had declared his intention to leave Old Trafford earlier in the week, doubting United’s potential to continue to challenge at the top of the game. Now though he has delighted Sir Alex Ferguson by agreeing to stay.

"It’s been a difficult week, but the intensity of the coverage is what we expect at Manchester United. I said to the boy that the door is always open and I’m delighted Wayne has agreed to stay." said Ferguson to the club’s official website. "Sometimes, when you’re in a club, it can be hard to understand just how big it is and it takes the events of the last few days to make you understand. I think Wayne now understands what a great club Manchester United is."

Rooney is believed to have been rewarded with a hefty pay rise for committing his future to the Premier League giants and, given United’s current inability to spend big money, Ferguson will be relieved to have kept hold of his most valuable asset.
