Aston Villa boss Gerard Houllier has seen his side dealt a blow with the news that club captain Stiliyan Petrov faces at least two months out. The Bulgarian midfielder picked up a knee injury in the club’s weekend Premier League game at Sunderland.

Although there were hopes that the blow was not serious at first, Aston Villa soon saw those dashed as it was confirmed Petrov would miss at least two months and may even require an operation.

"Unfortunately, I think we have lost Stiliyan Petrov for maybe at least two months", Houllier told the club’s official site. "We will see if he needs an operation or not – we will know that by the middle of the week. It’s a shame because he was getting up to a good level. It was a very unfortunate accident."
