Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has confirmed that he is taking the Carling Cup very seriously this season, but the Premier League remains his priority.

The Gunners breezed past Newcastle United at St. James Park last night, recording a comfortable 4-0 win and the fact the Frenchman had chosen to include Cesc Fabregas in his squad – bringing him on after 70 minutes – was taken as evidence that Wenger is taking the cup very seriously.

"I am taking the competition seriously", said Wenger. "I have a big squad at the moment and Cesc needs games as well. He played at Manchester City and tonight a little bit, so that’s what he needs at the moment."

The Frenchman confirmed though, that the Premier League remains his priority: "The priorities have to be right, we want to do well in the championship."
