Roy Hodgson has received a welcome boost to his position as Liverpool manager by winning the backing of Portuguese midfielder Raul Meireles. Hodgson brought the 27-year-old to Anfield in the summer, snapping him up from FC Porto for £11.5M, and has already made an impression on the player.

"I am enjoying playing for the manager a lot", Meireles told the club’s official website. "He has everything to succeed at Liverpool."

Meireles also stated that he believes Hodgson to be a nice man, who cares for his players and wants them to be happy not just on the pitch, but off it too. And this makes the squad want to succeed for him even more.

"He is a nice man because he always talks to us, he likes to know about our well-being and asks about our family. Every day we are working hard in training and we all want to do well for the manager and get Liverpool back to the top as quickly as possible."

The Portugal star also stressed the need for patience, stating: "It’s a new team with a new coach and sometimes it takes time to get everything right."
