Real Madrid legend Raul has explained that the problem at his new club Schalke is that the team are afraid.

The Ruhr giants had been expected to challenge for the Bundesliga title this season and bolstered their squad with the acquisitions of Raul and Klaas-Jan Huntelaar over the summer. Yet their season so far has been one to forget and they sit second bottom in the league.

Yesterday Schalke, who have been defeated six times so far this season, lost again, to Bayer Leverkusen at home. The situation for Felix Magath’s side is becoming more serious by the day, but Raul thinks he has identified the problem.

"We just cannot score out there", bemoaned the Spaniard, "and the team begins to be afraid."

However, Raul is still confident that things will get better, saying that despite "a lack of confidence" Schalke will eventually "get out" of the relegation zone.
