Liverpool boss Roy Hodgson hailed Fernando Torres as the difference between his side and Chelsea after the Anfield club saw off the champions on home turf by recording an impressive two-nil victory.

Hodgson, who would have come under increased pressure with a loss in front of the club’s new American owners, fired up his side and Chelsea were undoubtedly surprised by Liverpool’s sharpness and dogged determination. The Blues simply could not handle Torres, who produced two moments of brilliance to hand Liverpool the three points and leave Hodgson lavishing praise on the Spaniard.

"He’s taken more than his fair share of criticism, some of which has been grossly exaggerated and I’m also pleased that Fernando Torres will get a lot of the plaudits", Hodgson told the club’s official site. "Of course, when the team’s not winning it’s hard to defend these things, but today he’ll get a lot of the plaudits and people will say he’s back to his best. Let’s hope that’s the case, but certainly today he was. He played very, very well."

The win shoots Liverpool up the Premier League table into 9th and just five points behind the top four.
