Inter boss Rafael Benitez has admitted that the scale of the task at the Nerazzurri has surprised him and he did not expect to encounter so many problems. The European champions have made a mixed start to the Serie A season and find themselves third; they are also battling to qualify from their Champions League group.

The former Liverpool coach was thought to have been handed a plum job taking over a side which had just won a treble of trophies, but Benitez admits there are problems.

"I did not expect so many problems on the part of a team coming from a year when they have won everything", said Benitez. "The players are working well, but there are also problems."

Benitez also believes Inter will need to act in the January transfer window, especially having lost key defender Walter Samuel to injury: "We must work to be in the best possible position in January and we’ll see what we can do in the transfer window. We must do something after the injury to Walter, a major player."
