Roma and Lazio are preparing to do battle for the signature of Fenerbahce defender Diego Lugano. The tough-tackling Uruguayan defender could find himself available for transfer from the Turkish club should they succeed in tempting Bordeaux to part with Michael Ciani.

Lugano was impressive at last summer’s World Cup in South Africa and has won a whole army of fans across Europe, though the Rome duo are expected to lead the bidding. The defender has also previously indicated his interest in playing in Serie A.

Fenerbahce would demand a fee in the region of €12M for the 30-year-old and Lugano himself is thought to want a yearly salary of about €2M.
