Roy Hodgson believes that he cannot make any excuses for his Liverpool side after they went down to a 2-0 defeat at Stoke City yesterday.

The Reds had come into the fixture off the back of a good run which had seen them beat Bolton Wanderers, Blackburn Rovers and Chelsea in the Premier League, but Stoke brought Hodgson back down to earth with a bump.

"I’m obviously sad that a good run’s come to an end. It was always going to be tough, because it’s a battle here", said Hodgson.

"I don’t want to be seen to be making cheap excuses. We lost to a strong team who out-battled us in certain occasions."

Hodgson also saw Brazilian midfielder Lucas sent off late in the game and this only compounded the misery for the Reds boss. Next however, Liverpool welcome lowly West Ham to Anfield and they will surely be aiming to bounce back.
