Liverpool will be sweating on the fitness of Fernando Torres and whether Spain choose to play the striker in their midweek clash with Portugal. The forward picked up what has been confirmed as an ankle ligament strain during the Anfield side’s 2-0 weekend loss to Stoke City, but has nevertheless travelled to Spain.

Torres has struggled for fitness since the beginning of the season and just appeared to be finding his sharpness, having been especially effective when Liverpool beat Chelsea at Anfield; the Spaniard scored both goals in the 2-0 win.

Now Torres will be assessed by Spain’s medical team who will make a decision over what, if any, his involvement will be for the game against the Portuguese.
