Roy Hodgson has backed his summer signing Christian Poulsen to come good at Liverpool and believes the Dane is suffering unfair criticism in much the same way Brazilian midfielder Lucas once did. Poulsen cost £5M from Juventus, but has so far failed to spark at Anfield.

"He’s been a bit unlucky", explained Hodgson to the club’s official site. "He’s had one or two poor games, but when you come to a new club and you have a poor game or you’re playing in a losing team, it gets noticed by everybody."

The former Finland manager then stated that he could see comparisons with the treatment that Brazilian midfielder Lucas received at Anfield before he won over the fans and said the supporters will soon change their minds on Poulsen.

"Last year and the year before it was Lucas and now suddenly people are realising Lucas is a good player. I’m sure everyone here will realise Christian Poulsen is also a very good player."

Hodgson’s Liverpool face a crunch clash with bottom of the table West Ham at Anfield later today. Having slipped to a 2-0 defeat to Stoke City in their last game, Liverpool need to bounce back and must do so without the injured Steven Gerrard.
