Panathinaikos have moved quickly to appoint a new coach after sacking Nikos Nioplias by swooping for Jesualdo Ferreira. The 64-year-old, who was recently sacked by La Liga side Malaga to make way for Manuel Pellegrini, has inked a deal with the Greek champions until 2012.

Ferreira ticked the boxes Panathinaikos were looking for in that he has enjoyed success in a comparable league, winning three Liga titles in Portugal with FC Porto before moving to Spain, and also has extensive experience in the Champions League.

The Portuguese coach will earn €700,000 this season before seeing his salary jump up to €1.3M for the 2011/12 campaign. Panathinaikos will hope the appointment of Ferreira will be enough to ensure they retain their Super League title and see off the challenge of a renewed Olympiacos.
