Liverpool boss Roy Hodgson believes that Christian Poulsen has shown he has the mental strength to succeed at Anfield. The Dane put in his best performance so far in a red shirt as Liverpool beat West Ham 3-0 at the weekend and Hodgson was delighted.

"If you want an example of mental strength then Christian Poulsen will give you that", said the former Finland coach, who has been vociferous in his support of Poulsen, to the club’s website.

"He hasn’t had a good time and has been criticised. He’s not played to his potential, but he’s been playing in a team which hasn’t done well. But he’s gone out there and given an outstanding performance. In a good team he showed what a good player he is."

Hodgson believes that Poulsen will be crucial to Liverpool over the next few weeks given Steven Gerrard’s absence and is clearly backing his £5M summer signing to get it right.
