Clubs chasing Espanyol’s talented young defender Victor Ruiz have been surprised by the news that the player’s buy-out clause has been increased from €8M to €13M. As Ruiz has not extended the length of his contract, an agreement to up the buy-out clause will come as a surprise to several interested sides.

The player’s agent had already stated that he found it hard to imagine his client leaving Espanyol in the winter transfer window, and this latest move by the Catalan club will only increase the chance Ruiz will stay put in January.

This news is likely to disappoint Barcelona, Real Madrid, Tottenham Hotspur and Napoli, who have all been tracking the 21-year-old’s progress with great interest. A Spanish Under-21 international, Ruiz is tipped to continue to improve and establish himself as a top class defender.

Ruiz is currently under contract with Espanyol until 2013.
