Schalke boss Felix Magath has apologised to the club’s fans after their 5-0 drubbing at Kaiserslautern yesterday. Despite managing to qualify for the next phase of the Champions League, Schalke’s struggles in the Bundesliga appear no sooner to ending, and Magath has also pinpointed their European adventure as a contributory factor.

"We apologise to our fans who made the long trip and who encouraged us for 90 minutes and left the stadium disappointed", said Magath.

The former Bayern Munich and Wolfsburg manager then went on to single out the Champions League as a possible reason for his side’s collapse.

"Apparently, my players have been dreaming of the Champions League for 90 minutes. I am very disappointed because they approached the game exactly as I do not need. I have trouble understanding how a team that shone in the Champions League a few days ago can show such a different side."

Next up for Schalke is a mighty challenge in the shape of Bayern Munich, though at least the Ruhr giants will face the Bavarians at home.
